SUMMARY OF DEC 2011 ROAD ACCIDENTS

The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Police Service has disclosed, as many as 246 deaths were recorded in the month of December, 2011 from 1,231 motor crashes.

Head of Education, Research and Training of MTTU, ASP Alexander Kwaku Obeng said 1,731 vehicles were involved in these accidents which saw 1,258 obtaining varying degrees of injuries.

ASP Obeng added that 157 of the crashes were fatal with the majority of accidents caused by human error, particularly reckless driving and lawlessness.

Also, between the short period of December 31, 2011 to 1, January 2012, eight accident deaths were also documented. The same number was recorded same period last year. Pedestrians who were affected by these crashes numbered 209.
